Last autumn, Apple released its Series 4 Apple Watch; the most innovative update since the watch’s launch in 2015. The display is now significantly larger than before, despite the casing only measuring 2mm bigger. It’s been pushed to the edges of the screen, cutting down on the boarder and giving an active surface that’s over 30% larger than before, but it’s the health benefits of the new Apple Watch we’re interested in here.
The Series 4 watch has gained a range of new heart rate features. The watch can automatically detect if your heart rate is too high or low and also if your heart’s rhythm is irregular, which could be a result of atrial fibrillation: a potentially serious condition. The watch sends you a notification and if you’ve not already been diagnosed with a heart condition, you’re advised to see your doctor, even if you haven’t noticed any symptoms.
You can check your heart rate any time you like, just open the Heart Rate app and the watch measures your pulse, giving your resting, workout, walking and recovery rates. Technical advances made by the Apple Watch Series 4 allow for even more diagnostic features. Electrodes in the back of the watch and in the digital crown allow you to take an electrocardiogram, which is a test used to check your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity. This is very useful for fitness enthusiasts, who can keep an eye on how their heart is performing during workouts as well as those with existing heart problems.
Health Complications Made Simple
- More Complications You can fit more of the watch’s features, or complications, on the face of the watch with the Series 4 model, making it easier to configure for fitness.
- Heart Rate

Put The Activity app on your watch face and you can tell at a glance how much more you need to do to close your rings. - Workout
The Workout app is another useful addition to your watch face. Tap it and begin your exercise regime. - Beats Per Minute

The new-style watch face gives plenty of opportunity to tailor your Apple Watch Series 4 to your fitness regime. Here’s an example of an Apple Watch face that’s been set up for exercise.
Take a Breather
The Breathe app is redesigned for the Series 4 watch and is now available as a watch face. Simply raise your watch to be guided through a breathing exercise designed to help you to take a moment out of your busy day. There are three Breathe watch faces to choose from and according to Apple, ‘Taking moments throughout the day to stop, relax and practise mindfulness can help reduce stress and improve overall health.’
Taking a Tumble with iPhone buyers guide
The Apple Watch Series 4 also boasts a brand new accelerometer and gyroscope. The accelerometer measures speed of movement of the watch and the gyroscope can track its rotation and twist. By using them in combination, the watch can tell if you’ve taken a tumble, if a hard fall has been detected, your watch gives you an alert asking if you’ve fallen and presenting you with a simple way of contacting the emergency services. This Emergency SOS feature also displays your Medical ID badge on the screen for when help arrives and if you have an Apple Watch Series 4 with cellular connectivity, it works when your iPhone isn’t nearby. If you haven’t fallen, or you’re OK and need no assistance the alert can be dismissed, but if you’re unresponsive after 60 seconds, an emergency call is made automatically and your emergency contacts notified. Obviously, fall detection is of great benefit to older people living on their own, but it’s also a real boon to hikers and rock climbers. You could be knocked out cold due to a climbing accident and help could be brought to you without any intervention from yourself at all.
Attain Your Goals with iPhone buyers guide
Health insurance providers have a vested interest in keeping their subscribers fit and healthy. That’s why America’s third largest, Aetna, is launching its own fitness app.
The Attain app combines your health history with your Apple Watch activity to offer personalised goals. You attain points for your fitness activity, which can then be spent on a new Apple Watch or gift cards from leading retailers.
Currently, it’s only available to Aetna customers, but if it catches on, maybe more healthcare providers and insurance institutions will do something similar.
Working Out with iPhone buyers guide
Apple Watch Series 4 is a great help for your workouts. It’s like having a personal trainer right there on your wrist. Whatever your sport, you can set yourself personal goals, measure calorie burn and track your progress over time. The watch is water resistant up to 50 metres, so you can even wear it when swimming and workouts for yoga and hiking have also been added. Runners will find the new workout features especially useful. When you go for a run, you can set yourself an ongoing goal and then use the watch’s Pace Alerts to check whether you’re ahead or behind schedule. You can follow your steps per minute and time each mile or kilometre as you complete it.
If you’re lucky enough to use a gym with the right equipment, you can even pair your watch with the cardio-vascular machines and keep metrics like heart rate, speed and calories in sync between your watch and the piece of equipment you’re currently using. Apple Watch can even detect when you’re working out and remind you to switch on the app, allowing it to add the exercise you’ve already done to your total and with the new watchOS 5 operating system, you can challenge your friends to a seven day competition in which you earn points based on how much you’ve exercised that week. However you work out, your Apple Watch Series 4 makes it easier, more efficient and above all, fun.
